Ancient Textile Database

The textile database was started in 2026 when I had this crazy idea to make information about archaeological textiles from Britain more accessible to anyone that wanted to know about them. I’m aiming to cover all of prehistoric and Roman period Britain to start with but there may be scope to widen this out to cover medieval textiles at some point in the future. I have much of the data for the Late Bronze Age, Iron Age, and Roman period together already in a spreadsheet but it will take me some time to add the information to this site.

As the database grows, users can access information about the textiles by broad technique, material, and period. The information is taken from published and unpublished sources and fully referenced throughout. In some cases, I have seen the textile remains myself first hand. I will include images of actual textiles where possible and where I can get permissions, or will redraw illustrations as needed. Where an image of a specific textile does not exist but the structure is known, I will be including a generic illustration of the textile structure.

If you have any questions, want to report errors, or have information on archaeological textiles that you would like me to include, feel free to contact me!
